The Courtesan

121cm x 83cm. Oil on canvas.

With this piece I wanted to borrow from Manet’s famous Olympia and translate it into a contemporary setting. In the original, Olympia the courtesan confronts us shamelessly. We are there for the transaction or else we shouldn’t be there at all. How to translate such a concept across to today? What are we willing to buy and sell, can we face the shameless vendor, and how is the price paid?
